UN to discuss sanctions against Libya

The UN Security Council will meet today to discuss draft proposals for sanctions against Libyan leaders locked in a bloody battle for survival against a popular uprising.

It comes as efforts continue today to evacuate 40 Irish citizens stranded in Libya.

An emergency team is to fly to Triploi today although it is unclear at this stage what time it will arrive, as it is dependent on getting clearance from the Libyan authorities.

Professor Helena Sheehan from DCU's School of Media touched down on Irish soil at lunchtime yesterday.

After spending a number of days stranded in a hotel in the centre of Tripoli, she landed but has said trying to get out of Libya was "an awful experience".
