Voting in the abortion referendum got underway this morning on the islands off the coast of Co Mayo and Co Galway.

Polling stations opened at 8am and are due to close at 8pm.

Islanders off the coast of Co Donegal cast their votes late last week, while the electorate on the mainland will go to the polls on Wednesday.

Campaigning in the referendum continued over the weekend and is expected to intensify over the next 24 hours.

On Sunday, Catholic priests read a letter to their congregations urging a ‘yes’ vote, while the Adelaide Hospital Society has called on the Taoiseach to recommend a ‘no’ vote.

The Catholic Bishops said the proposed amendments is a significant anti-abortion measure, but the Adelaide Society, a charitable organisation, said the proposal will criminalise women and will threaten doctor-patient confidentiality.
