A US cargo plane made an emergency landing at Shannon Airport last night after its engines caught fire shortly after taking off.

The emergency services at Shannon were put on high alert after the crew of the Murray Air DC-8 reported engine problems with the aircraft at around 10.30pm.

The flight was en route from the US to the German city of Cologne, with a scheduled transit stop in Shannon.

Residents in nearby Askeaton say houses shook as the plane stalled overhead, with flames streaming from both engines.

The aircraft eventually landed safely at 10.45pm and a technical examination is now underway.
