The Government allowed 28 Patriot missiles to pass through Shannon Airport in June 2001, according to reports this morning.

The weapons, which were being transported from Israel to the United States, were on board a civilian cargo plane which landed at the Co Clare airport for a "technical stopover".

Each of the 28 Patriot missiles contained 44kg of high explosives and almost 500kg of rocket fuel.

Government documents also reportedly revealed that two flights carrying a possible cargo of cruise missiles were allowed to land at Shannon during the Kosovo war in 1999, while another flight containing "class A explosives" was allowed to land during the 1991 Gulf War.
