Country's longest-running LGBT support celebrates 40 years

The country's longest-running support service for lesbian and gay people is to launch a new look web facility today to celebrate it's 40th year in service.

The Gay Switchboard first started in 1974, providing listening and support assistance to young LGBT people.

The Minister for Communications Pat Rabbitte will launch the organisations new website service in Dublin today.

"It's a support that's been there since 1974 - it started originally as Tel-A-Friend because they wouldn't print the word gay in the telephone book at the time," Director of the Gay Switchboard, Tony Cooney, said – and things have changed significantly over the past 40 years.

"It's been around for 40 years, so it has a track record of supporting the LGBT community of Ireland … the call numbers show that the service is still needed."
