A 24-year-old man has died after being stabbed by a fellow prisoner on a landing in Dublin's Mountjoy Jail yesterday evening.

The incident happened just after 6pm and the victim died a short time later in the nearby Mater Hospital.

He has been unofficially named as Derek Glennon, from Stanaway Road in Crumlin, who was serving a sentence for manslaughter and for fleeing from the custody of prison officers in 2005.

The Prison Service and the Gardaí are both investigating the incident, while the Prison Officers' Association has responded by seeking an urgent meeting to discuss the issue of violence among inmates.
