Migrants from eastern Europe down 40% this year

The number of immigrants coming to Ireland from the newest EU member states has reportedly fallen by 40% in the first half of this year.

The number of immigrants coming to Ireland from the newest EU member states has reportedly fallen by 40% in the first half of this year.

Reports this morning say just over 40,000 people from the 12 states to join the EU since 2004 obtained PPS number between January and June.

This compares to 66,500 in the same period last year.

The fall-off is being attributed to the slowing Irish economy, as well as improving job prospects and wage levels in eastern Europe.
