31-year-old Joe Moffat, from Drimnagh, was arrested on July 22nd amid massive protests against a meeting of the G8 leaders in the Italian port city of Genoa. Mr Moffat was charged with possessing a lethal weapon and with resisting arrest, but it is not clear whether those charges have been dropped.

Mr Moffat was one of hundreds of people arrested as more than 100,000 demonstrators descended on Genoa to protest at how the policies of the G8 are preserving poverty, repressing minorities and harming the global environment.

Several of those protestors have complained of police brutality and torture after they were arrested by Italian security forces. One protestor, 23-year-old Carlo Guiliani, was shot dead by a paramilitary policeman as the protests turned to riots during the course of the G8 meeting.
