Senator calls for extension of late-night Luas

Fine Gael Senator Brian Hayes has called on the company operating the Luas system in Dublin to extend its planned late-night services over the Christmas period.

Fine Gael Senator Brian Hayes has called on the company operating the Luas system in Dublin to extend its planned late-night services over the Christmas period.

The company is planning to run such services up until December 23, but Mr Hayes said today that they should be extended into the New Year.

"Over the Christmas and New Year period, you'll have huge numbers of people in and around Dublin city centre,” he said. “There’s a necessity to provide people with public transport to get back home.

“There’s also an argument from a policing and a safety perspective that we should be encouraging people to use public transport, even late at night, so they can have a safe way home.”
