Security stepped up after reports of dissident activity

Gardaí are erecting barriers across Dublin city centre this afternoon ahead of the Queen of England's visit next week.

Queen Elizabeth will arrive in Ireland on Tuesday for a four day visit, during which she will travel to Kildare, Tipperary and Cork.

A massive security operation has been put in place and there has already been a number of arrests ahead of the visit.

Superintendent John Gilligan from the Garda Press Office said Gardaí will be out in force around Dublin.

The Times newspaper in the UK is reporting this morning that security ahead of the visit is being stepped up following an attempt by dissident republican terrorists to buy missiles and rocket launchers.

According to the newspaper the arms buying plot came to light in recent weeks.

The security risk is now considered so high that armed Metropolitan Police Royalty Protection Officers will be deployed on the streets of Dublin.

Up to 10,000 Gardaí and members of the Defence Forces are also expected on the streets in the biggest security operation ever mounted here.

Meanwhile, parking restrictions on around 30 streets in Dublin have come into affect today.
