“In the first half we were unbelievably bad. I knew we could not get any worse.

“Scunthorpe were in control of the game and we had to change our formation to get a foothold. Half-time came just at the right time for us.

“We were already a goal down and it could have been more but we turned things round in the second half and took control.

“We got ourselves back on level terms, hit the woodwork twice and really should have been out of sight before the end.

“But in the closing stages we lost a bit of concentration and Scunthorpe could easily have won it.

“I’m sure this is a game where both managers will be believing their team should have had three points.”

Ipswich were totally outplayed in the opening 45 minutes and fell behind to David Mirfin’s looping header on the half hour.

But substitute Jaime Peters grabbed a fortuitous equaliser 12 minutes into the second half and Ipswich then saw several chances go begging as they piled forward in search of a winner.

“We have made a good start to the season but we still have a lot of improving to do,” Keane added.

“We are not quite at the same level as the likes of QPR and Cardiff. We have some way to go to catch them up.”

New permanent Scunthorpe manager Ian Baraclough feels his team are maturing at Championship level.

“This is our third season in this division and we are learning all the time,” he said. “We lost four or five really good players during the summer but I feel the team we have now is a better unit.

“They are maturing at this level. Ipswich are one of the best teams in the Championship and we are disappointed not to have beaten them.

“There was only one team in it in the first half. We dominated and the only criticism I can have is that we have to be more clinical in front of goal and take our chances.

“The Ipswich equaliser came from out of the blue just a simple ball through the middle which we did not deal with but we got ourselves back into the game and really should have won it in the closing stages.

“Jonathan Forte had a great chance for us in the closing minutes but I am not going to criticise him for not taking it.

“As long as he continues to get into those sort of situations, and work as hard as he does, then I will be happy.

“We have 10 points on the board now and have made a good start to the season.

“To follow our performance in midweek against Manchester United in the Carling Cup with another effort like this today is really encouraging.

“It speaks volumes for the players we have got here and their hunger to be successful.”
