SF says stadium must be built on former Maze site

Sinn Féin says it will not support a new sports stadium in the North unless it is built on the site of the former Maze Prison.

Sinn Féin says it will not support a new sports stadium in the North unless it is built on the site of the former Maze Prison.

The comments come amid speculation that the DUP might veto plans for the redevelopment of the site.

The proposed £240m (€312m) stadium would be the centrepiece of the redevelopment, but some DUP members are believed to be pushing for a stadium in Belfast instead.

Some have already said they are concerned that the Maze plan also includes the preservation of some H-Block buildings as part of a "conflict transformation centre", which they describe as a shrine to terrorism.

Sinn Féin, however, says it will not accept the stadium being built on any other side.
