In the latest incident, at 7.30pm tonight, a couple and one child were killed when their car was involved in a collision with another vehicle outside Athenry, Co Galway.

The woman, who was in her 20s, and the man, who was in his 30s, died at the scene.

A three-year-old child was rushed to University College Hospital in Galway city but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Three people who were in the other car were also taken to hospital but their injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

Earlier, a nine-year-old girl died when the car in which she was a passenger overturned on the Longford to Kilashee road at 5pm.

In a previous incident, a male pedestrian, aged 22, died when he was struck by a car outside Carrickboy, Co Longford, at 2am.
