Soccer: Neville cool on English World Cup hopes
Gary Neville claims it is unfair to expect that England will win the World Cup next summer.
Neville has tried to contain the nation’s hopes which have risen on the back of England’s demolition of Germany and qualification for the finals in Japan and South Korea.
The Manchester United full-back claims no-one in the England camp will be saying Sven-Goran Eriksson’s side will win the World Cup.
Neville said: ‘‘The Press always say we can win the World Cup.
‘‘I’ve been in two European Championships and one World Cup now and every time we’ve gone into a tournament as second or third favourites and we’ve no right to be second or third favourites.
‘‘There are countries who have been doing it year in year out for the last 20 years and they’ve been winning World Cups and major championships.
‘‘We hope we can go there and perform to our standard that we know we can perform to.
‘‘With a little bit of luck we might progress to somewhere we can all have a great experience of.
‘‘But to say we’re going to go there and win the World Cup is not something you will hear many of the players or manager saying.’’
