A police officer in the North has suffered multiple injuries after he was dragged hundreds of yards down a road by a car trying to escape from a police check in Newcastle Co Down.

The officer received head injuries and is in a serious condition in hospital.

Another officer, who was thrown clear of the car after being dragged only a short distance, was treated in hospital for leg injuries and later released.

The PSNI said the officers were carrying out routine traffic duties in the area at around 1am.

Police said the car was later spotted driving at speeds of up to 90mph some miles away and eventually stopped when a stinger was deployed and punctured the tyres.

A 21-year-old man was arrested as the car came to a halt but there were no passengers in the vehicle. Police say the car had not been stolen.
