UPDATE (5.40pm): Gardaí investigating the death of a woman in Sligo today have arrested a 33-year-old male. He is being detained at Sligo Garda station.

A murder investigation has been launched by gardaí in Sligo after a woman was pronounced dead in hospital this morning.

Gardaí in Sligo received a call at approximately 10.30am this morning, when they went to a house on Mailcoach Road, Sligo.

On arrival, ambulance crew were at the scene and gardaí encountered a man, aged in his early 30s, carrying a knife.

This man was tasered by members of the Regional Support Unit in Sligo.

Medical attention was provided to the man and also a woman, aged in her early 20s, who was in the house at the time.

Both were removed to Sligo Regional Hospital for medical attention and the woman was pronounced dead shortly after 11am.

The scene is preserved for a technical examination and the State pathologist, Marie Cassidy, has been notified and is expected to conduct the post mortem later this evening.

Gardaí have now began a murder investigation in Sligo and anyone with information can contact Sligo Garda Station 071 9157000, The Garda Confidential Line 1 800 666 111, or any Garda Station.

No arrests have been made, at this stage.
