Gardaí investigating the near fatal stabbing of a French student in Dublin say they are close to making an arrest.

Twenty-three-year-old Barbara Riouaille was stabbed in broad daylight as she entered her apartment block in Christchurch on Tuesday, May 10.

Gardaí say CCTV footage of the apartment block is being viewed as part of the investigation.

They have confirmed that the business student did not know her attacker and was stabbed in a random mugging by a stranger.

Ms Riouaille’s larynx was so badly damaged in the assault that doctors had to perform an emergency tracheotomy operation after she was rushed to hospital.

Her condition is said to be improving in Saint James' hospital.
