Gilmore: Issue of abortion will not destabilise Government

The Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore has said says the coalition will not be destabilised over the issue of abortion.

Earlier today fellow Labour minister Kathleen Lynch said she believed an expert group set up to examine the issue would recommend legislation for abortion in certain circumstances.

A number of Fine Gael TDs have threatened to vote against any legislation to allow for abortion in Ireland.

Speaking at the MacGill Summer School in Glenties in Co Donegal, Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore said there would be no split in government over the issue of abortion.

"We have established structures within government which enable us to make key decisions on a joint basis," he said.

"We have a very good working relationship, particularly between the Taoiseach and myself, which is capable of resolving any issue that arises within the lifetime of the Government."
