Safety experts are warning about the dangers of walking on ice after wintry conditions have resulted in rivers and canals around the country freezing over.

Yesterday, the River Boyne in Drogheda in County Louth was frozen for the first time in living memory.

People are being warned however that the ice is just a few millimetres thick.

The ESB is also warning about the serious hazards presented by frozen water surfaces at reservoirs around the country.
