Police tonight launched a murder investigation after the discovery of a man's body inside a suitcase dumped in Dublin's Royal canal.

The find was made on a stretch of the canal near Croke Park.

The black case was spotted by two passers-by, who dragged it on the canal bank and saw the body inside.

It is not clear how long the body has been in the water, but it is thought to have been a matter of days.

State Pathologist Dr John Harbison is on his way to the scene, and police are checking missing persons' lists in an effort to identify the man.

Garda Superintendent Albert Treacy said: "We believe the body had been there for about three days, and we are appealing for anybody who might have been near the scene around three days ago to come forward."
