The PSNI has announced plans to increase its patrols in the run-up to the Christmas amid fears of a dissident republican firebomb campaign.

The police force announced the measure today, saying a number of real and hoax devices had been found in recent weeks.

In previous years, dissident republicans have planted incendiary devices in shops in an effort to disrupt the holiday season.

The PSNI said its increased patrols may be accompanied by British soldiers in certain cases, something that has been criticised by Sinn Fein, which said heavily armed military forces had no role to play in policing.
