A service of remembrance has taken place in Dublin for organ donors, their families and recipients.

Over 2,000 people including the Lord Mayor attended the ceremony at Corpus Christi Church in Drumcondra.

Four children who received transplants earlier this year carried forget-me-not flowers to symbolise the lives of those who have died.

Mark Murphy from the Irish Kidney Association said it was a very emotional event for the many Irish people affected by organ donations.

Mr Murphy said that over the last 14 years there has been an average of 135 kidney transplants every year, and that kidney transplants are the most needed in Ireland.

He said there have also been 15-20 heart transplants and 30-40 liver transplants in the country.
