Sinn Féin has today called for the disbandment of the Garda Special Branch in a new set of proposals relating to the policing in the Republic.

The party says all Special Branch members should be re-trained and re-deployed to other policing duties.

Its submission to the Garda Policing Plan also calls for the establishment of an all-Ireland police force and a doubling in the amount of money spent on the Drugs Unit.

Announcing the proposals today, Sinn Féin TD Aengus O'Snodaigh said the end of IRA activities meant there was no longer any need for the Special Branch.
