The remains of a dinosaur have been unveiled after being discovered by archaeologists in a clay pit.

The skeleton of the Iguanodon, believed to be 2.5 meters in length, was discovered during a dig at a quarry in Ockley, Surrey.

Palaeontologists have so far uncovered the preserved jaw-bone, pelvis and ribs of the lizard-like reptile and are confident the full skeleton can by unearthed from the weald clay.

Preserved skeletons of the herbivorous iguanadon, which could weigh up to 4.5 tonnes, have been discovered in the country before, although experts say the current find of bones are in an excellent condition.

Dr Jerry Hooker, from the Natural History Museum in London, said: "The bones were found at the weekend during a geologists field trip to the quarry and teams of six to seven people from the museum have been working since then to unearth the skeleton.

"We are confident the full skeleton can be excavated in time from the clay and sandstone.

"The bones appear to be very well-preserved and we are in the process of digging out the remains to be analysed and stored.

Although other skeletons of such dinosaurs have been found we seem to be extremely lucky with how well these have been preserved and we are very excited by the discovery."

Dr Hooker said the remains were likely to be eventually displayed at the Maidstone Museum in Kent.

In 1983 at the Ockley brick works site a previously unheard of species of lizard, now known as Baryonyx Walkeri, was discovered.
