The UDA is being blamed for an overnight attack on the home of an SDLP assembly member and his mother in Larne, Co Antrim.

Danny O'Connor and his 85-year-old mother were both treated for shock after the overnight attack in which tar was poured over her car.

Mr O'Connor fired several shots from his shotgun to disperse the attackers.

Sinn Féin said people in Larne believe the UDA was responsible.

The organisation reaffirmed its ceasefire yesterday but there has been widespread scepticism over whether it will make any difference.
