Brother of victim identifies 'IRA gunman'
A man whose brother was shot dead on Bloody Sunday today identified a possible IRA gunman who fired towards soldiers after the first victim was killed.
Giving evidence to the Saville Inquiry, Bernard Gilmour did not speak the man’s name but gave it to the tribunal written on a piece of paper.
Mr Gilmour, whose brother Hugh, 17, was one of the 13 men shot dead on January 30 1972, was the second witness to identify the gunman, also spotted by former Bishop of Derry Dr Edward Daly.
Last month William Harley, 65, gave a name again written down which Counsel to the Inquiry Christopher Clarke QC said was the same as that given by Mr Gilmour.
The gunman appeared after Jack Duddy, 17, was shot dead in the car park of Londonderry’s Rossville Flats and was reported to have fired shots from a pistol blindly round a corner towards Paratroopers who had arrived in the city’s Bogside moments earlier.
Last month five members of the Official IRA from which the Provisional IRA emerged came forward and are currently seeking anonymity in order to testify to the Inquiry about the activities of paramilitaries in the city that day.
