Dr Tim Creedon, Director of the Institute of Technology Tallaght has expressed his sympathy to the friends and family of the two students who died in a house fire in Lorient, in France.
He said Patricia McDonald and Carol Nolan were both bright, successful students who were popular with lecturers and fellow students alike.
The two third-year European Studies students were at college in France as part of the Erasmus student-exchange programme.
The IT’s foreign officer has travelled to Brittany to see whether there is any further information on the fire.
The landlord reported that he saw smoke coming from the house and used his set of keys to gain entry, whereupon he found the bodies of the two girls.
Police have sealed off the house for a forensic examination but they believe the fire was accidental.
Dr Creedon said they have set up a counselling service in the IT for friends of the two girls.
