The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) has called on Health Minister James Reilly to intervene in the overcrowding crisis at University Hospital Galway (UHG).

There were 38 emergency patients on trollies last night, with eight of these having been there for three days. Meanwhile a 78-year-old patient spent a fourth night on a trolley.

The hospital has now moved to full capacity protocol, which means putting extra patients on full wards throughout the facility.

Despite this, 91 beds remain closed at Merlin Park hospital as well as 25 in UHG.
