A 22-year-old jet-skier has died after getting into difficulty on Lough Mask in Co Mayo, emergency workers said today.

The man, who is believed to be aged 21 and from the locality, was jet-skiing with a friend last night when they both experienced engine problems.

One of them decided to swim ashore and raise the alarm, while the other waited with the vehicles.

The Coastguard mounted a search when informed of the incident, but it failed to locate the man last night.

A helicopter from Sligo was subsequently despatched at first light this morning and managed to locate him at around 6am.

He was airlifted to hospital in Castlebar, but it was too late to save his life.
