Appeal for witnesses to fatal canal accident

Gardaí in Co. Offaly are appealing for witnesses after a woman died yesterday afternoon when the car in which she was travelling entered the Royal Canal.

Gardaí in Co. Offaly are appealing for witnesses after a woman died yesterday afternoon when the car in which she was travelling entered the Royal Canal.

The accident happened on the road between Cloghan and Shannonbridge at about 1pm.

The 30-year-old woman who died was a passenger in the car, which left the road and entered the canal at Clononey.

The other occupants, a male driver and an 8-month-old baby boy, were also taken to hospital in Ballinasloe with minor injuries.

Gardaí in Birr are appealing for witnesses to contact them.
