IRA' not a problem' in power-sharing stalemate
The IRA is “not the problem” in the Northern Ireland power-sharing stalemate, it was claimed today.
Sinn Féin’s chief negotiator Martin McGuinness said tensions within the Democratic Unionist Party were proving to be the main stumbling block.
He said: “There is considerable satisfaction, in my view, within the process, with the key negotiators in all of tis that the IRA are not the problem at this particular time.
“The problem is whether or not the Democratic Unionist Party are going to make up their minds as to whether or not they are going to do the business, and do the business now.”
The DUP and Sinn Fein are holding last-ditch meetings on proposals presented by the British and Irish governments to break the political stalemate.
Speaking on BBC’s Inside Politics programme, Mr McGuinness would not be drawn on what concessions the IRA had made to the process.
Mr McGuinness said the challenge now for the DUP leader Ian Paisley was to show confidence – and deliver his party before the election.
