Seamus Power (West Waterford) will look to defend his Irish Youths title at Royal Tara Golf Club on June 29 and 30 and if he succeeds he will become the first player to do so since Graeme McDowell successfully defended his title in 2000.

The 19-year-old from Waterford has already tasted victory this season with his win at Thurles Golf Club in the Munster Youths Championship where he had a comfortable six shot win over his nearest rival.

However the field of 75 which will contend for the title includes 31 overseas players with nine countries represented including Qatar, Austria, Wales, Germany, Scotland and France.

The Irish Youths Amateur Open Championship was first played for in 1969 at Delgany when Declan Branigan was victorious. Other notable winners include Ronan Rafferty (1979), John McHenry (1980/1981/1985), Paul McGinley (1988) and Rory McIlroy (2004).
