Di Matteo plays down Scharner sulk

West Brom head coach Roberto Di Matteo insists there are no problems with midfielder Paul Scharner over his reaction to being substituted during the clash with Bolton.

West Brom head coach Roberto Di Matteo insists there are no problems with midfielder Paul Scharner over his reaction to being substituted during the clash with Bolton.

Scharner headed straight down the players’ tunnel instead of sitting on the bench after being taken off during the 1-1 home draw.

Di Matteo wants players to show respect to their team-mates but has no problem with his summer signing from Wigan.

He said: “The substitution was a tactical decision. It happened last year with other players a few times.

“I don’t want players who are happy not to be playing.

“Players should be respectful towards their team-mates but it’s no big deal for me.”

Scharner was then sent off when playing for Austria in Tuesday’s Euro 2012 qualifier with Belgium.

Di Matteo admits Albion will have more confidence ahead of Saturday’s clash with Manchester United at Old Trafford as a result of their recent 3-2 win at Arsenal.

He said: “Our win at Arsenal probably gives the players a bit more belief in their own ability.

“But that win is not going to change our attitude because it was always good, very positive and very committed.”

The Baggies will be bidding to win at Old Trafford for the first time in 32 years.
