Initial post mortem results are expected this morning on the body of two-year-old Robin Leahy, who was murdered in Callan, Co Kilkenny, yesterday.

The state pathologist, Dr John Harbison, arrived at the scene late last night, where he also examined the body of her father, George McCline, who died at the stabbing incident during a domestic dispute.

The child's body was found with stab wounds to the neck by neighbours on the pavement outside a house on the town's Main St, after witnesses saw her mother Lorraine Leahy run screaming for help shortly after 5pm.

Inside the house, Mr McCline, who is from Canada and in his thirties, was also found stabbed to death. The woman was taken to St Luke's Hospital in Kilkenny with head injuries.

Neighbours said Mr McCline had had a relationship with Ms Leahy and was known to visit every few weeks.

Gardai have ruled out reports that the incident resulted from a dispute over the child's custody.
