Turkish Islamic militants linked to al-Qaida have admitted planning attacks on US targets in Turkey. Leftist and Kurdish militants are also active in the country.

Police said the injured, including three women, were taken to hospital. None of them were in serious condition, the police said.

The explosion occurred in the hall of the building in downtown Adana.

Adana is home to Incirlik Air Base, which hosts 10 US refuelling aircraft used to support operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The US Embassy in Ankara confirmed the explosion but could not say what caused the blast.

A US consulate is also located in Adana.

Al-Qaida-linked Turkish militants carried out a series of suicide bombings in Istanbul in November 2003, killing some 60 people.
