A music teacher from Co Mayo has announced her intention to seek a nomination for the up-coming presidential, despite the fact that the deadline for nominations expires tomorrow.

Grainne Conroy, from Crossmolina, is hoping to get the backing of 20 Oireachtas members, which she needs to get her name on the ballot paper.

Ms Conroy is the latest in a string of potential candidates to announce an intention to challenge Mary McAleese for the presidency.

Green Party TD Eamon Ryan and heritage protection campaigner Vincent Salafia have already abandoned their attempts to enter the race.

However, former MEP Rosemary Dana Scallon is believed to be still trying to get the support of 20 Oireachtas members after abandoning her efforts to get a nomination via the county councils.
