Nobel Peace Prize winner Jody Williams will present a report today on the scale of the global land mine problem.
Williams, who won the 1997 prize with her International Campaign to Ban Land Mines, will present the report at Nato headquarters in Brussels.
The military alliance which is keen to stress its role in disposing mines, and a Nato-sponsored project aims to destroy millions of mines and other munitions in former communist nations that have joined up to its “partnership for peace” program.
It has been active in Albania, Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia.
Nato peacekeepers have also been active in de-mining in Bosnia.
However, campaign groups have been critical of the alliance for using munitions such as cluster bombs which can lay undiscovered for years and have been blamed for killing or maiming several people in Serbia following the alliance’s 1999 bombing campaign there.
