Midland will race as a Russian team in Formula One next season after receiving approval from motorsport chiefs in Moscow.
The team, formerly known as Jordan, are based at Silverstone but owned by Russian-born businessman Alex Shnaider, who now has Canadian nationality.
Midland today received the backing of the national federation in Moscow to run their cars under the Russian flag in 2006, making good on Shnaider’s promise when he bought the team last winter.
He said: “It has always been Midland’s intention to enter Formula One with a Russian licence, an association which reflects this project’s core targets and values.
“I believe that Midland Group’s decision to enter its team under the Russian flag will push forward the development of Russia’s motorsport and open new horizons for Russian racing drivers at the international level.”
Formula One commercial rights holder Bernie Ecclestone, who has previously held talks with Russian authorities to stage a grand prix there, backed the move.
He added: “I am very happy that we now have in Formula One a team with a Russian licence. I am sure the Midland team will create interest not only in Russia but also worldwide.
“I wish Alex Shnaider and the team the best of luck and the support of a great nation.”
Dutchman Christijan Albers will race for Midland next season, with Portugal’s Tiago Monteiro his likely team-mate. Another Dutchman, Nicky Pastorelli, is the team’s test driver.
