Gardaí in Cavan have confirmed the body discovered yesterday in the back garden of a house at Harmony Heights in the town is that of missing teenager Jamie Farrelly Maughan.

The 13-year-old had been missing from her Cavan home since last Saturday.

She had apparently phoned her mother that evening to say she was sheltering from the rain but would be home soon, but she never arrived.

There were sightings of the teenager the following morning, Sunday, but she was not seen subsequently until her body was found at about 4pm yesterday.

Gardaí say her death is being treated as suspicious.

The scene was cordoned off for a number of hours before the body was removed to Cavan General Hospital.

The results of the post mortem examination by Deputy State Pathologist, Dr Margaret Bolster, are expected later today.
