Eight tourists have been killed and 21 others injured when their bus smashed into a truck in southern Egypt today.

Egypt's national news agency MENA said the crash took place as the American tourists were travelling from Aswan to Abu Simbel, the site of an ancient Egyptian temple.

Road accidents are common in Egypt because of bad roads and poor enforcement of traffic rules. An estimated 8,000 people die in car accidents annually in the country.
