The row over the HSE's controversial recruitment freeze is to be referred to the Labour Court following the breakdown of talks this morning.

The HSE and health service unions had met for further discussions at the Labour Relations Commission, but failed to resolve their differences.

The unions say the job freeze is having a serious impact on services in several hospitals around the country.

They also claim the HSE has breached the latest social partnership agreement by failing to consult unions before making the move.

The freeze is designed to claw back a €245m overspend in the HSE's budget for this year.
