Mary Lou McDonald says row over election date is 'bonkers'

Sinn Féin's Deputy President has said it is 'bonkers' that Fine Gael would consider holding the General Election on a Thursday to avoid a clash with a rugby match.

It is understood strategists within Enda Kenny's party are concerned about a potential loss of votes as fans travel to Ireland's Six Nations match against England - and want the country to go to the polls on Thursday February 25th instead.

The date of the election has sparked a row between the coalition parties - with Labour eager to see it held on the Friday to allow students go home to vote.

Sinn Féin's Mary Lou McDonald says the row is bizarre: “It’s kind of bonkers isn’t it?

“What does it say about Enda Kenny?

“What does it say about the Government parties that we in this standoff over something like this?

"If they are going to fall out with each other about matters like this you would wonder how they can argue about stability in Government on big issues of the day.

“I think it should be on a Friday.”
