Abortion legislation comes into effect today

The law permitting abortion under limited circumstances comes into force today.

The Protection Of Life During Pregnancy Act provides for pregnancies to be terminated where there is a "real and substantial risk" to the mother's life - whether it be from a phyiscal illness or risk of suicide.

Under the provisions, two medical experts must examine the mother - and certify that the risk to her life can only be averted by carrying out a termination.
