A team of construction volunteers from Ireland will travel to the slums of Kenya to build a public library, it was revealed tonight.
In August, a group organised by the Institute of Technology at Tallaght will go to Nairobi to build, paint and landscape.
With local helpers from the township of Mukuru they will create the library and adult learning centre.
The Institute will then help in managing it.
The centre will target mainly young mothers who have had to leave school before they completed their education, due to pregnancy or early marriage, opening new opportunities for them and their families.
Those with disabilities will receive special attention, as many of these have been excluded from the existing education system because of the difficulties their parents face in getting them to and from school.
A women’s HIV/Aids group will also benefit.
Volunteers are expected to raise at least €4,000 and the group is looking for more helpers.
