Fans give Libertines warm reception at comeback gig
Indie rockers The Libertines reunited for their first gig in six years and looked like they had never been away.
The foursome, who went through one of the most public and bitter breakups in British pop, came on stage to the strains of Vera Lynn’s wartime classic We’ll Meet Again.
All eyes were on front men Carl Barat and Pete Doherty and they did not disappoint.
With Gary Powell hidden behind a bank of drums and bassist John Hassall remaining in the shadows, the two traded riffs and shared vocal duties like old pals.
One of the highlights of last night’s sell-out show at the Kentish Town Forum in north London was 'Can’t Stand Me Now' which details the effect Doherty’s well publicised drug problems had on the band and his relationship with Barat.
A jubilant Doherty ended the song by hurling his harmonica into the ecstatic crowd.
There was little in the way of on-stage chat during the one hour 20 minute set but the show ended with all four band members embracing in front of an adoring audience which suggests this reunion may go beyond the few dates the band announced.
The band, whose hits included 'Don’t Look Back Into The Sun', collapsed when Barat fell out with his joint frontman because of Doherty’s wayward behaviour as he battled drug problems
Last year Doherty, who has often been in trouble with police over his drug use, claimed the band was offered millions of pounds to reform.
