Some councils could be axed under a new proposal to radically shake up local government.

Some councils could be axed under a new proposal to radically shake up local government.

The aim of the proposal is to stop duplicaton of local authority members who sit on both town and county councils representing the same area.

The proposal suggests the area covered by a town council could be extended to take in its rural hinterland.

The net effect would be to eliminate 744 local town representatives but increase the number of county councillors.
