Asda defends £5 jeans

Asda is slashing the price of men’s jeans to £5 (€7.30) for two pairs.

The Bank Holiday offer applies to “easy fit” jeans in the supermarket’s George range.

Asda pre-empted criticism of its low clothing prices by saying its sourcing methods meant customers could buy the garments “with a clear conscience”.

The men’s jeans usually sell for £3 per pair at George departments and are being reduced for the long weekend due to stock clearance.

George managing director Angela Spindler said: “The Bank Holiday special offer just goes to show that we put our money where our mouth is at George to bring customers Britain’s lowest priced denims.”

Asda was one of several retailers criticised in a report by anti-poverty group War on Want last year over working conditions of factory workers in Bangladesh.

The chain today said its recently-formed sourcing team ensured all George jeans were “ethically sourced”.

Factories are regularly audited to ensure they comply with the Ethical Trading Initiatives code of conduct and with Asda’s own standards, the chain said.
