Tens of thousands of people have reportedly avoided getting penalty points for motoring offences because they hold driving licences from the North or overseas.

Reports this morning said more than 42,000 people had escaped the penalty points net because the authorities cannot add points to a licence issued outside the jurisdiction of the Republic.

The figure equates to around one-sixth of the motorists officially listed as having been issued with penalty points.

Those escaping the net are mainly Northern drivers, but they also include tourists and foreign workers who hold driving licences from their home countries.
