Minister of State at the Department of Health Kathleen Lynch said today that Cabinet will await the outcome of a report from an expert group on abortion before making any recommendations.
Deputy Lynch said over the weekend that the Government will have to legislate in certain circumstances.
The expert group has been set up to examine a ruling from the European Court of Human Rights on the so-called X Case.
That report is due in October and Minister Frances Fitzgerald says she will wait until then to comment.
"What's important is to wait until we get the recommendations and examine them," she said.
"We have a commitment to the programme for Government and have asked an expert group to do the work. Let's wait and see what the expert group has to say and then they can be considered."
