Gardai are helping in the hunt for an escaped convicted rapist.

The man escaped from his prison escort last Sunday in north Co Dublin. He was being taken under escort to a "neutral venue" to see his mother, who for health reasons, could not visit him in Dublin.

The man was serving nine years for rape and is not due for release until September 2002.

A review group set up to examine escort procedures has forwarded new instructions to prison governors around the country.
